Course Description

A classroom course that provides continuing education course for nurses, medical health care professionals, and other interested individuals.

EKG monitoring is becoming more common in inpatient and outpatient care settings as well as emergency and critical care areas. Nurses and other healthcare professionals are responsible for cardiac patients including monitoring and interpreting cardiac dysrhythmias.  They must develop critical thinking skills required to quickly and accurately identify potentially life threatening conditions. This EKG course is designed for these healthcare professionals wishing to enhance their level of education to include anatomy and phy siology of the cardiac system, EKG electrode placement, equipment, and recognition of lethal and non-lethal dysrhythmias. A thorough understanding of the cardiac conduction system, circulatory system, lay out of the EKG waveforms to include the P-Wave, R-Wave, QRS Complex, T-Wave, as well as the PR Intervals, ST Segments, and the normal timings of each area is essential to EKG recognition and best patient outcomes.  This course will also describe and discuss the different pacemakers, their uses, and troubleshooting techniques.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  3. Identify and Recall the structures of the heart, its valves, and chambers
  4. Explain the Cardiac Cycle
  5. Identify and describe the components of the Conduction System

  7. Describe which conduction activity produces the EKG wave forms
  8. Identify the different leads
  9. Calculate patients HR using the EKG
  10. Identify the Anatomical Landmarks in the EKG process
  11. Identify artifact and the causes thereof
  12. Differentiate between an EKG and cardiac monitoring
  13. Explain the process of identifying the rhythm
  14. Identify the components of the rhythm
  15. Describe the process and criteria to determine a Dysrhythmia
  16. Identify the Normal Sinus Rhythm
  17. Identify the Sinus Bradycardia Rhythm
  18. Identify the Sinus Tachycardia Rhythm
  19. Identify the Sinus Dysrhythmia
  20. Identify the Sinus Arrest rhythm
  21. Describe the variety of Junctional Dysrhythmias
  22. Describe the variety of Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT)

Books may also not be shared during the course; this is against American Heart Association rules and guidelines. Each student must have their own current book; this is per AHA rules in order to attend an AHA course and is not a Central Valley Medical rule.
